Karl was born in Australia and educated in Ireland. He began his legal training at University College Dublin obtaining an honours law degree in 2004. After completion of his university studies, he worked in the litigation department of a multinational insurance company in Dublin. He handled litigated matters only including serious motor claims and workplace fatalities.
In 2006, he commenced his professional legal training with the Law Society of Ireland and qualified as a solicitor in 2009. Upon qualification, he worked on the major casualty accounts team of a leading global insurer where he was responsible for a large and diverse range portfolio of complex liability claims. He has experience handling product liability claims, public liability, occupiers’, employers’ liability, long-tail and short-tail disease claims and cases involving cross-border litigation. Karl worked closely with self-insured clients, including multinationals and some of Ireland’s leading companies.
Before returning to Australia last year, Karl practised for a number of years as a specialist insurance litigation solicitor in Dublin. He was instructed to defend all types of liability claims by major insurers, loss adjusters and semi-state bodies. He was also instructed to act in commercial and workplace disputes.
